Featuring Judy Heitz!

I am constantly getting questions from students and blog readers about hanky quilts...what in the world do I do with all of those hankies???

A couple of years ago, a good friend and "favorite" student Elizabeth Brown, introduced me to her cousin Judy Heitz.  She was interested in making a hankie quilt and needed some advice.  I pointed her in a direction and she just took off and ran with it.  I was privileged to have received photos of the completed quilt as well as many close up photos of what Judy did in each block.  I knew she would knock your socks off and wanted to share.  

Thank you Judy...you have inspired a LOT of people!  Here is her story below:  

"The quilt is in honor of my mother Barbara (maiden name Brown), and features several hankies with her name or a “B” on them.  Most of the hankies came from Mom’s aunt Helen, who owned a very prestigious linen shop in Grosse Pointe, Michigan during the first half of the 1900’s.  Mom and I used to look through these beautiful things when I was much younger, wondering what we could possibly do with them.  How I wish she were still with us, and that we could have worked on the quilt together.  Two blocks have a button from the sleeve of Mom’s wedding dress, one has a locket/pin with a photo of my Dad inside, and one has a little daisy pin that is the symbol of the PEO sisterhood, to which Mom belonged.

This quilt was truly a labor of love, and would not exist except for the inspiration and instructions from my cousin Elizabeth.  She is truly awesome!  She is the only one we know who can teach someone to make a quilt over the telephone!
