Last year I was "junkin" with my favorite youngest daughter, Emily, and I found a beautiful Crazy Quilt square that measured about 18" square-ish. It was in a sad state of disrepair. Many of the blocks had disintegrated leaving bare threads but the embroidery and remaining fabrics were gorgeous. I purchased it for about $20 and it has been hanging on my design wall ever since. I just love to look at it.
As you can see from my previous post, I have a fair amount of airplane/airport time coming up and I don't have any handwork to do! Seriously???!!! I needed to come up with something to keep me sane on the airplane and decided I would tackle renovating this piece.
I have some beautiful black linen and some red linen and decided these were perfect to mount this on. I added a layer of Quilters Dream Request between the layers for weight and stability. The edges of this piece were very raggedy...something had previously been ripped off.
I had just the right amount of crocheted lace and stitched this down to the edge. I used the red linen for the backing as well as the binding edge. The crocheted lace will be snugged up to the binding and the piece should appear half-way square.
Being that many of the areas of this piece are thread bare and raggedy, I am covering them with vintage crocheted pieces. I will be adding hundreds and hundreds of beads to this piece for embellishments as well as old jewelry and buttons. I don't want to add any new fabrics or embroidery out of respect for the original maker. I only want to embellish what she has already done.
I'm very jazzed about working on this and will keep you posted on my blog as progress is made. I have named it my "Eternity" project because it will probably take me that long to get it done...I will have handwork to do on an airplane for a very long time!

This is going to be lovely! the colours are brought out beautifully against the lace. I do love the idea of a new lease of life for this old beauty.
